Semtech Launches Power Supply Controller for Double Data Rate (DDR) Memory Subsystems in Laptops and Embedded Systems
New Control Device Enables Unprecedented Power Efficiency

SC1480 DDR Memory Power Supply Controller, targeted at new mobile computers and data communications systems that employ DDR-memory. Typical power conversion efficiency of 94 percent, plus features like standby/shutdown modes, wide input supply range, two output voltages, source/sink capability, small footprint packaging, and low quiescent currents combine to make the SC1480 controller an attractive addition to a system designer's arsenal of space-saving, power-efficient ICs.
The SC1480's input supply range is 2V to 25V allowing it to interface directly with standard battery configurations and a/c adapters. The SC1480's two output voltages--1.25V for active termination (Vtt) and 1.25V at 3mA for a buffered reference (Vref)-- provide the type of integration that competitive products do not offer, thereby helping designers reduce board space and cost.
In addition to normal mode of operation, the SC1480 also offers power-reduced standby and shutdown modes. Typical quiescent current in normal mode is only 700µA. In standby mode, the typical quiescent current is reduced to 125µA by turning off the Vtt output but leaving the Vref output on, significantly reducing battery draw in systems that implement a suspend-to-RAM sleep state. In shutdown mode, the SC1480 typically draws only 10µA.
The SC1480 controller uses the RDS(on) of the low-side MOSFET for current sensing in order to help improve efficiency and reduce cost. More accurate current-limit control can be achieved by placing a resistor in the source path of the low-side MOSFET. A strong 1A gate drive allows the designer to choose MOSFETs that optimize the design for cost, efficiency, or a combination of both. Competitive products that utilize internal MOSFETs give the designer no choice, while paying a penalty in terms of efficiency and thermal dissipation.
A small footprint TSSOP-14 package minimizes board-space requirements for the SC1480, while integrated under-voltage, over-voltage, and over-current protection mechanisms enhance system reliability.
