Semtech Adds Economical, Compact LED Driver to its Industry-Leading Family of Micro-Power ICs for Handhelds

The SC603 supplies regulated LED power for camera flash or backlight for color LCDs and keypads in cell phones, PDAs, and other portable electronics

Camarillo, California - March 21, 2003

Semtech Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced availability of the economical SC603 charge pump regulator. The device is used to supply power to LEDs (light emitting diode) used for backlighting color displays and keypads or camera flashes in battery-operated portable electronics, such as cell phones, smart phones, PDAs and GPS devices.

The SC603 is a small footprint (3x3mm), low profile (1mm) MLP-Micro 10-lead component, which is now available as an environmentally sensitive, lead-free package. The new device provides designers with the industry's most dense, low-cost, power-efficient, and easy-to-implement LED driver solution, extending Semtech's lead as the dominant supplier of charge pump regulators for handheld electronics.

The SC603 regulator supports designs requiring up to 200mA (at 4.5V) or 160mA (at 5.0V) of output current, at input voltages from 2.5 to 6.5 Volts, making it well suited for Lithium-ion powered systems. The user-selectable output voltages and pump frequencies (262 or 650 kHz) support a wide range of LEDs, while maximizing power efficiency. The SC603 leverages Semtech's mAhXLife™ technology, which yields highly efficient, tightly regulated output voltages to help preserve battery life. The device features an enable pin to shutdown circuit operation; thus, when disabled, the part only uses <1µA of operating current. The SC603's inductor-less design also minimizes electromagnetic interference to nearby circuitry. Patented low noise mode switching circuitry is combined with ultra-steady output currents, enabling designs to be implemented using only four tiny external capacitors.

"As handheld electronics continue to march toward richer feature sets, controlling cost and power is a bigger challenge," said Eddie Yeow, Director of Portable Power Management at Semtech. "Designers can no longer afford outmoded solutions like switch-mode regulators, which increase system cost, board space, signal noise, and complexity. The SC603 tackles these design hurdles head on, delivering a dense, low-cost, power-efficient solution that is also easy to use."

Key Features of the SC603

  • Low-cost charge pump regulator drives up to 10 LEDs
  • Selectable 5.0 or 4.5 Volt regulated output at 200 or 160 mA currents respectively to support a wide range of LEDs
  • Selectable switching frequency (262 and 650 kHz) to optimize efficiency with respect to load
  • Space saving MLP-Micro 10-pin, lead-free package (3 x 3 x 1 mm)
  • Low input/output ripple reduces system noise and filtering requirements
  • Requires only four small external capacitors for implementation
  • Power efficient operation helps extend battery life
  • Applications include camera flash and color LCD/keypad backlighting in handhelds
